Moving home checklist

The legal steps

Send me your ID and proof of where your money is coming from as soon as you instruct me
Sign and return the contract and transfer before exchange
Check my bank details by phone before sending any money
If you’re buying a house, arrange buildings insurance to start from exchange (for a flat, I’ll check the block’s policy)
Collect the keys from the agent on completion day
If you’ve bought a flat, tell the freeholder or managing agent you’ve moved in
Set up council tax and utilities at your new home

Send me any money needed for completion, after checking my bank details by phone
Gather all the keys for the home you’re leaving, including windows, garages and sheds
Finish packing, and keep a box of essentials for your first night
